National Academies of Science African Science Academies Initiative Evaluation, Washington, DC. EnCompass is the internal evaluator for the African Science Academies Initiative funded by the Gates Foundation and implemented by the National Academies of Science. The work involves documenting, evaluating and conducting applied research alongside the U.S. Institute of Medicine as it implements a project to build science academies throughout Africa (currently working with South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Senegal, Cameroon, and Kenya). The goal of the program is to build evidence-based policy making in health and HIV/AIDS throughout Africa. The EnCompass team is completing baseline data collection in all initial countries helping countries to clarify their own understanding of the Initiative, and to adapt emerging indicators to reflect the needs of the African scientists and researchers. EnCompass is also working on capacity building for each African Academy in the area of evaluation. (2005-2009)
